Cod Liver Oil Could Help Millions with Rheumatoid Arthritis

By admin

A new study published in the journal Rheumatology may lead to the reduction of the intake of anti-inflammatory drugs for millions of RA sufferers throughout the world.

The study followed 97 adults with RA for 9 months. Half of them took 10g of high strength cod liver oil daily for the nine months while the other half were given a placebo. Over the course of the nine month trial, the participants were asked to gradually reduce their intake of anti-inflammatories. Almost 40% of the group who were taking the cod liver oil were able to reduce the intake of anti-inflammatories by 30 percent compared to only 16% in the placebo group.

In the past, Omega-3 essential fatty acids have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties.

One of the issues with the study protocol was that the cod liver oil group was taking 10 pills a day which could be intolerable for many patients. However, the study is promising and may reduce some of the intake for anti-inflammatory drugs for at least some of the millions of people suffering with RA throughout the world.

Further research is needed in this area.
